Lourens Heersprink, the 36 year old dutch rider on team magpie, has announced that he will be retiring from professional cycling once he has completed the races he is currently signed up for. In a meeting with the team manager he said that he had been thinking about retiring for a long time, and he felt that he had now reached a point where he would be more useful to the team as a trainer than a rider. Examinations showed the Heersprink had huge potential, especially in climbing, but unfortunately in his whole career he never found the right team where he could grow and develop. Moving forward, he hoped to continue working with team magpie in order to prevent other young hopefuls suffering the same fate as he has. He said his looming exit from the sport will not change how he plans to race the upcoming races, and he will still give his all for the team. His departure will open another space in the riding roster, which manager Barnessi said will likely be filled by a very young rider. Barnessi said that he selects riders not based on nationality but individuals who fit in with the positive culture of the team, a culture, he said, that Heersprink helped create. Barnessi confirmed that he had begun negotiating with Lourens for him to stay on as a trainer, he said that both parties were keen, the only potential inhibiting factor would be finance.
